So Now Google Owns the Internet

ireland flagI received a letter from Google – yes a letter.  Now it was just pushing me in the direction of Google Adwords for advertising for my business.  But it just highlights how the different, and perhaps old fashioned, snail mail is catching on again.

Every day I delete somewhere between 100 – 200 emails – and that is after the spam filters have been at work.  Google send me email fairly regularly, I glance at it and then delete.  But I read this physical bit of paper from the postman, and it has been sitting on my desk for a few days with the nice bright Google logo winking at me.

So Google own search – basically that is the short version.  The longer one, 96% of Irish internet users use Google.  Now does that mean they use Google all the time?  And surprisingly these figures are more than a year old – they quote the source.

More Google Statistics:

  • YouTube has 131,000 daily Irish users – how much work is getting done in those offices?
  • Nearly 50% of the above are between the ages of 25 – 44, the ones with the money to spend?
  • 69% of Irish people are regular internet users – what is regular?  As this in my world seems a bit low – but I forget to take out the grannies and babies – though I know a granny or two that use the net.
  • 1.25 million people are subscribed to the internet in Ireland.  Is this people or households?  I’d love more of a breakdown.
  • Ireland is 10th in the world for online buyers – this has shot up during the last few years.
  • 90% of people believe they can save money online – no surprise here except what are the other 10% thinking?

The last two facts are very interesting – €300 million worth of goods were purchased online in Ireland – but Irish consumers spent €2,500 million online.  Where did the other €2,200 million go? In my experience this money went into gambling and the UK.  I know some friends who will buy online from the UK regularly because the goods they want are too expensive in Irish shops compared to online prices and there are not the same Irish online stores to buy from.  Hopefully we will catch up here and keep a bit more of that money in Ireland.  Strangely enough I don’t know anyone who admits to online gambling – and its not my thing, mine is gadgets.

I work as an SEO consultant in Dublin – to a certain extent I will echo Google – can you afford not to have a strong online presence?

Thanks Big G for the info.

I received a similar letter from Google promoting their AdWords program and was amazed. Yes, Google does own the search market.
