This was one of the keywords that some used to find my SEO blog yesterday. Strangely enough it is not a phrase that was on the page – though I wrote a post about something similar a year ago.
Now were they asking “Is SEO in a recession?” or “SEO for my website during a recession?”
Firstly online marketing has been hit along with all businesses with the lack of spending. However so far it does not seem too bad. There are many businesses that are taking this time to re-evaluate a resource that has been sitting there for a while untended – their own website.
During the last five or six years it was expected for all companies to have a website – basically an online brochure. For many companies that’s as far as it went. There was no search engine optimisation for most of these websites – many have their company name as the title tag which does not tell Google what the service is or what the page is about.
However the great news for these companies is they have a website that is a few year old and most of them can get into the front page for their main key terms quite easily now due simply to the age of their site. A few changes are required taking a few days – but that is it.
What are the Changes?
Title tag – this is not the article title you see at the top of the page, but rather a part of the coding behind the scenes that lists in the search engines. On almost all this needs to be re-written after a bit of keyword research.
Description tag – again this is behind the scenes and not seen on the page, it is the snippet that Google will use to describe the list on the search engine results page.
Sometimes page copy needs updating and a little re-writing.
Then the core of search engine optimisation – some link building. Beware don’t do the link building without first carrying out the keyword research as you may use up links that are hard to go back and change.
Essentially for sites that are a few years old this will be enough to get them ranking in the front page for their key words – it is fairly simple and cost effective – less than a week to carry out the work and less than a €1000 on average.
