PR for Entrepreneurs – LINK Network Sep 09
September 30, 2009
Do you bother trying to get your company in the Press? I do from time to time – however I do find it quite a difficult process as the interest in search engine optimisation is limited and often seen as some sort of black art that cannot be easily explained.
Last night the main presentation of the evening was given by Rob Hartnett of Hartnett McClure PR. This was one of those talks where I was not convinced before hand that it would be relevant for me, so it is great to report that it was.
Rob covered a lot of ground in a very short space of time, the first being an analysis of a recent newspaper and highlighting the stories in the paper. Once this process was explained it was easy to see how most of these stories / news had been placed – and are really not news at all.
I write press releases for clients; however this is mainly aimed at link building. Rob reinforced MINE – Memorable, Interesting, Newsworthy, Effective. This is a specialised art in its self, one that Rob was quite happy to share tips on using an interview technique – this was very effective and made the whole process much easier to understand.
Sean Rice of BCO Consultants wrapped up the meeting with a short and effective presentation of his company. Sean was one of the six participants I shared a table with as we conducted and perfected our one minute elevator pitch. Others at the same table were: Vince Doherty of Dakor a web design company based in Maynooth, Barry McKena of DPI a paper and ink supply company, Galina of Kane Finance – a tough business in these times, and lastly Iain Pilkington of 3RRR an architecture and design company.
A big thanks to Miriam Ahern the facilitator for the evening, Miriam is a management consultant who has made my networking experience within the LINK Network much easier than I thought it would be. For all you who are thinking of starting a business or are still in the first few years I recommend joining LINK – for me it has been a great way to gently begin to network with other business owners.
