Online Workers and ADD
December 22, 2008
ADD – attention deficit disorder. The internet is built to grab your attention and keep you surfing from one site to another – it is built to grab your attention and keep you entertained. This can be a real problem when starting any business that is internet based, and it is a huge well known problem for link builders and online marketing professionals.
When a website goes live it is great to see it get indexed, great to see the amount of links that point to it, good to see it turn up in the Google search results, and if you have advertising running on it great when you see it start to earn some money.
A great deal of this is just a distraction. Ad revenue does not need to be checked every hour! One forum I used to write on, many of the members listed their ad revenue on a widget on their browser – it is just a distraction, and so are many forums.
Building relationships, writing content, building links – this is where my energy needs to go every day.
I check stats once a day and run a rank checker once a day, once set up they can run in the back ground while I get on with work.
Focus and concentration are the essence of success online and maybe elsewhere also. Writing down my goals for the day, week, month, and year is a good place to start, and I keep coming back to them.
I have found myself in the past working on a competitive analysis and then suddenly looking at the screen and wondering how I got to the page I am on and what did I want here. It happens less and less but unfortunately it still happens from time to time.
In the beginning I tried to do everything – photoshop, php, asp, link building, content writing, add your own here, but this list could go on quite a bit. I know that I can become expert or very competent at most of these, but is it the best use of my time?
I am good at content writing, link building, SEO analysis, competition research, the rest I can contract out to people with much better skills than me. Here are two sites I read often that help in this area Problogger and Copyblogger – but again I filter my reading using a feed reader – I don’t have time otherwise – it is just too entertaining.
