Improve Search Engine Ranking

For most small business sites that I have been working on recently there have been a few easy changes to help improve the search engine rankings fairly quickly.

Here are three easy and quick ways to improve web site ranking in the search engines.

Title Tags

This is very easy to fix and it has a powerful and quick effect on the ranking of your website and on every individual page. Every page should have a great descriptive title that contains your keywords or phrases - this is the first way to tell the search engines what your site is about.

Description Tag

This is the small amount of text that is shown in the search results under the title. This can be used in two ways - sales and keywords. If there are secondary keywords or phrases that could not be fitted into the title use them in the text here, and the description should be written as your sales text, inviting users to visit your website. In the search Google will highlight the words that the searcher has entered, they do this on both the title and in the description.

Directory Submissions

Every website will fit into a category and there are many directories that are niche specific. Submitting your site details to these directories can be tedious however being list in them can help with search engine rankings. Use your keywords as much as possible for the anchor text in these submission. There are web directories that are country specific, this is a list of Irish Web Directories - so if your website targets the Irish market they are a great place to start.
