How to Install SEO for Firefox

SEO for Firefox is one of the many free SEO software tools available to download.  I have been using this one for the last couple of years as it is easy to use and I can get a very quick over view of the competition for a search query.

This post is written specifically for those on my SEO course.  Till now I have just been saying download and install, thinking that people not used to SEO would have no problems, however it is one of the many follow it questions that I get by email after the course.  Therefore in order to make everyone’s life easier this post will be a step by step guide.

Download

Go to Aaron Walls SEO website and download SEO for Firefox.  It is free, though you will have to register.

Install the Firefox browser, most of the free SEO software is written for Firefox – so you may as well get used to using it.

After you have downloaded SEO for Firefox you will need to restart your browser for it to work.

Setup the Program

On the bottom right hand side of your browser you will see the SEO for Firefox logo.

This is on – image

This is off – image

A word of warning – When you are just browsing switch the program off, if you do not you will after a while be banned from Yahoo! and Google.  What this means is that you might not be able to search using Google for a while and you will not have access to cache pages.  Bans are lifted after a few hours.

Settings

Right click on the SEO for Firefox logo and you get a small popup menu.  Click on “Options…”

This screen will pop up.  Without making changes you will not get any results.

Change:

  • PR to automatic and 1Sec
  • Google Cache to auto and 2 Sec
  • Age to auto and 2 Sec
  • Y! Links to auto and 1 Sec
  • Y! Edu Links to auto and 3 Sec
  • Y! Gov Links to auto and 5 Sec
  • Y! Page Links to auto and 2 Sec
  • Trends to Show
  • Page Blog Links to auto and 3 Sec
  • Business to Show
  • Whois to Show
  • Sktool to Show

That is it.  Click OK at the bottom and the setting will be saved.

Now when you run searches on Google you will see this under each result.

When you click on any of the blue links it will give you more information.  The most important for quick competition research are age and links – if you have a new site and are competing with a very old one prepare, usually, for a long wait and lots of work.

Y! links will open Yahoo! and show the list where the site is getting it links from.  Y! links page will again open Yahoo! and show where the page is getting it links from.

This is the basics of SEO for Firefox, play around with it or come along to my SEO course to learn this and more SEO tools.
