Ban Tables and Kill Flash for Site Optimisation

by Leslie on February 11, 2009

Most of the websites I come across at present are SME websites, some are a few years old and some have been built as recent as last summer.  Two in particular that are causing problems have little text on the home page – one has flash, it looks great, but please you do want someone to see it.

It is okay to have flash on the home page, but not if that is the only thing on the page.  Search engines, Google, need something to get their teeth into – flash is invisible for them.  Another site I am promoting has a single image on the front page; the rest of the front page content is links to the rest of the site – this is a headache for search engine optimisation.  Now this will work, eventually, but it does require more work due to the lack of text.

My last bugbear at present is web developers who are still building using tables.  There is only one good reason for using tables – that is tabulated data.  The code to text ratio is too high using tables this is the reason to keep to CSS, that and the flexibility CSS gives in changing designs with less work.
